Week 40 – Four A’s to acquire a skill

We all face a time where we wan’t to learn something completely new or improve an aspect of something we can already do. Here are a few simple steps to be mindful of in order to help you specifically when it comes to singing.

Awareness
Be precise in what it is you would like to get better at. Don’t just say “singing”. What about your singing would you like to improve?

Diction
Vocal strength
Dynamics
Learning text off by heart
Remembering the melody or harmony line
Watching the MD more
Not being so glued to your music?

Take one small step at a time say for this example : Diction.
What is it precisely that you don’t like about your diction?
How precisely would you like it to be? Do you have a role model whose diction you would like to copy?

Attention
Pay attention to your diction as you sing during rehearsals. You will need to practice at home in order to improve and it isn’t necessary to sing in order to improve. Speak your text and record yourself. What words, phrases do you like? Which ones do you not like? Imagine what you would sound like if your diction were better?

Action
A few simple actions to take in order to improve diction are to:
slow your speaking down
focus on what your tongue and lips are doing – practice tongue twisters
make sure you take a good in breath and support as you speak

Achieve
Periodically record yourself and notice improvement. Recognise that and go back to paying attention to yourself and how to work at improving. Small regular steps are better than spending one session working for a long time less frequently.

Exercise
Use the above model on a different aspect of your singing you would like to improve or anything else you would like to learn. Intelligent and focused attention is required in order to learn efficiently
