Week 9 – Placement of sound

Have you ever considered where you feel the sound you make when you sing? Which part of the mouth is it in? Is it anywhere else? Do you feel any vibrations? Where do you feel them? If your sound had a shape what shape would it have and where would it be?
Depending on which notes you sing do you feel them in different places in your body? How about when you sing different vowel sounds? Can you feel the different shapes you make in your mouth for different vowel sounds?

I like to think of a shape the size of a walnut just in the roof of my mouth forward towards the top teeth. For me this helps to create a brighter and bigger sound without any force.

If you can feel or visualise your shape you can move it around. A shape that is too low in the mouth or throat will not produce as fine and resonant a sound as a shape that is more forward and up. After all we wish to be heard clearly by the people sitting at the back of the venue in which we are to perform.

The sound has to be projected forward through a tall and narrow shaped mouth, sound projected through a horizontally open mouth will get lost and won’t be as resonant.
This is a very abstract topic and I would urge you to be mindful of what works for you and to become aware of what it is you are doing to get the desired result you are happy with.

Exercise
Sing a phrase and move your sound around in your mouth and be aware of what comes up for you. If you are brave record some of your sounds and see which one you like best and why.
